Garlic Planted. Cold Frames Finished.
Last week we finished both the cold frame boxes AND the planting of the garlic! Last Monday we took the time to turn the soil one last time in the boxes behind Hodson and plant the garlic there. In total we planted 90 cloves of garlic! In each of the 6 boxes, we planted 15 cloves and in order for them to thrive, we planted them in 3 rows of 5, 4 inches apart, and 2 inches deep.
Once the garlic was planted, we watered the boxes and covered the soil with straw. We did this in order to trap in heat and moisture, as the cold weather is approaching, as well as contain the nutrients in the soil.
On Wednesday we went to the garden and completed the last two cold frame boxes. We have the boxes sealed with a layer of bricks in order to keep the heat in and the weeds out. We plan to meet with Zena some time next week to discuss what she would like to see planted in there during the winter months. We also harvested the radishes in the already existing cold frame box. It yielded about 10-15 radishes and they were very tasty! We kept them for ourselves just as a test run to see how they turned out.
Looking ahead we plan to keep up with the maintenance of the garden with things such as weeding and cleaning/organizing the area. We will keep you posted on the progress of the garlic and what is going to be planted in the cold frames! Thank you for your support and spread the word!
