College Relations & Marketing

Wendy Mitman Clarke

Director of Media Relations

Wendy joined Washington College in November 2012 as a staff writer for College Relations & Marketing; most recently she served as Associate Director of Communications. She has been instrumental in telling stories about the students, alumni, and faculty who exemplify the distinctive character of the Washington College community. In addition to developing editorial content for admissions publications and writing stories for the web, Wendy also works on the Washington College Magazine, serving as associate editor.

Wendy’s career as a journalist began in daily newspapers. After three years as a staff writer for the Associated Press, she moved into magazines where she worked as a freelance writer for Smithsonian and National Parks, and was executive editor of Chesapeake Bay magazine for six years. Her career as a writer has included creative nonfiction published in River Teeth; a book of essays (Window on the Chesapeake: The Bay, Its People and Places, published in 2002 by The Mariners Museum and Howell Press); and six years as a monthly columnist with the national sailing magazine Cruising World. Her poetry, which has appeared in The Delmarva Review, earned the 2015 Pat Nielsen Poetry Award and a Pushcart prize nomination.

She holds a BA in English from the University of Vermont, where she graduated with highest honors, and is studying for her master’s degree in English at WC, with a projected graduation date of spring 2016.

She spends as much time as possible on the water, wherever she can find it.
